The impact of digital disinformation on the provision of ecosystem services essential to the quality of life

Abstract

This article investigated to what extent digital environmental disinformation impacts the protection of natural capital and, consequently, the provision of ecosystem services essential to the quality of life. The qualitative research was carried out by applying the techniques of bibliographic and documental investigation, based on the analytical-deductive approach. It was found that economic and political groups resistant to the changes necessary to achieve sustainability have promoted disinformation in the digital environment in order to manipulate public opinion by manufacturing uncertainty about scientific consensus and discrediting people and entities involved in environmental causes. From the data analyzed, it was concluded that digital environmental disinformation harms the services provided by ecosystems by preventing or delaying the adoption of urgent and indispensable measures to safeguard their existence and protect biodiversity.
